In the Gallery for September:

Ann Mohnkern

“THE SHORES OF MAINE”

“ Sherman Lake”, Oil on Canvas, 20 x 30

Ann Mohnkern, a marine landscape artist from Yarmouth, Maine, will present her first Boston show “The Shores of Maine” beginning September 3, 2009 at Artists Crossing, 34 Bromfield Street, Boston. A reception to meet the artist will be held at the gallery on Thursday, September 24 from 12 Noon to 2 p.m.

Ann, a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists, paints the ocean in all its moods, from hurricane force to tranquil repose. Her work takes the viewer to the places that inspire her, including Little Wood Island and Bailey Island in Casco Bay, and Monhegan Island which is 10 miles offshore. Her work reflects her respect for and understanding of the sea.

During the summer, Ann paints small watercolor sketches on location. Come winter, aided by these sketches, photographs and memory, she paints larger and more formal works with oil on canvas or linen. She portrays the abstract patterns of water moving against and around objects, capturing the transient effects of wind, tide, and light. For her, the challenge is to communicate through her art a feeling for what is below the surface of the water and what is reflected off the surface from above, while not losing the integrity of the image taken as a whole.
